EP Chairs call for the immediate release of human rights defender Oyub Titiev

Alarmed by the detention of Oyub Titiev, Chairs of the Foreign Affairs committee, David McAllister (EPP, DE), and of the Human Rights Subcommittee, Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), stated: "We are very concerned at the detention this week of Oyub Titiev, the prominent human rights defender and Director of the Memorial Human Rights Centre in the Chechen Republic and we call on the Russian authorities to immediately ensure his release and to provide him with all the necessary safeguards in the current proceedings."

Novaya Gazeta is no stranger to hostility and controversy. The crusading Russian newspaper is known for powerful investigations — and in Russia, this sort of work can provoke an angry reaction. The paper's star reporter Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead in her apartment building in 2006. Exactly who ordered her murder has never been confirmed.

МВД Чечни решило судиться с Комитетом против пыток

5 декабря 2014 года, Ленинский районный суд города Грозного приступил к рассмотрению иска МВД по Чеченской Республике о защите чести и достоинства к Мураду Амриеву, обвиняющему полицейских в похищении и пытках. В ходе судебного заседания представитель республиканского МВД ходатайствовал о привлечении в качестве ответчика также и МРОО «Комитет против пыток».
