Another wave of assaults on opposition activists has rolled through St. Petersburg. Among the victims are human rights activist Dinar Idrisov, Open Russia member Oleg Maksakov, Solidarity activist Vladimir Shipitsin, Artpodgotovka supporter Vladimir Ivaniutenko, and, possibly, the dead activist Konstantin Sinitsyn. All the victims figured on social networks in the Group of Unique People.

A St. Petersburg court liquidates a labor union that accepted foreign funding

A city court in St. Petersburg has sided with Attorney General’s Office and liquidated the “Workers’ Association” Interregional Trade Union. Federal prosecutors argued that the union operated as a “foreign agent,” accepting money from abroad and lobbying Russian lawmakers. The court didn’t rule on the labor union’s “foreign agent” status, but it agreed to dissolve the organization nonetheless.

Situation regarding the suspension of the educational license of the European University at Saint Petersburg

In July 2016, the General Prosecutor of the Russian Federation began a series of inspections of the European University at Saint Petersburg. The basis for the conducting of these inspections was an official complaint by the deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, Vitaly Milonov, to which other citizens’ complaints were added later.

Sociologists’ NGO obtains revocation of 'foreign agent' fine

The Centre for Independent Social Research (CISR), an NGO based in St Petersburg, has succeeded in having a fine revoked by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. The Centre was represented by the lawyers’ association, the Club of Third Sector [i.e. Non-Profit - trans.] Lawyers, and its case was argued by the defence lawyer, Dmitry Bartenev, Article 20 reports, citing the Club of Third Sector Lawyers.

Russia passes law to overrule European human rights court

The vote in the Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, came the same day as the ECHR ruled against Russia's Federal Security Service over spying. The European court said Russia had violated privacy rights with a system to secretly intercept mobile phone communications.

Rights Group of the Week: Memorial Research & Information Centre

On 6 November 2015 the Ministry of Justice declared the Memorial Research and Information Centre, based in St. Petersburg, a 'foreign agent' NGO. The Memorial Research and Information Centre includes an archive, a library, premises for discussions and exhibitions, and an online GULAG museum. The Centre was founded in 1991 by Veniamin Ioffe as a research centre to support Memorial's work on historical archives. Arseny Roginsky, chair of International Memorial Society, described the decision of the Ministry of Justice as 'an enormous blow for all those who work on preserving the memory of Soviet terror.'

В петербургский ЛГБТ-клуб Infinity пришли с проверкой из прокуратуры. Об этом в четверг, 26 февраля, Дождю рассказал юрист «Агоры» Виталий Черкасов.

Основанием для проведения проверки стали около 100 обращений жителей Петербурга с просьбой обратить внимание на деятельность этого клуба. Заявители утверждают, что в клубе якобы занимаются продажей наркотиков, и туда пускают несовершеннолетних.
